Reimagining the Core : Reshaping Economics, Business, Accounting, Entrepreneurship, and Education for Global Sustainability
This theme is specifically crafted to engage our esteemed audience of academics and students. It serves as a vital platform for faculty to critically examine existing theories, pedagogical approaches, and professional standards, advocating for a deeper, more systemic integration of sustainability within the very foundations of their respective fields. For students, it offers an essential forward-looking perspective on how their chosen disciplines are rapidly evolving to address global challenges, highlighting exciting new avenues for study, research, and career development in purpose-driven organizations and sustainable ventures, all directly informed by innovative educational practices.
7 sub-themes, each exploring key facets of our collective journey towards a sustainable future:
Beyond GDP: New Economic Models and Indicators for Planetary Well-being, and their Integration into Economic Education. This sub-theme explores alternative economic frameworks, such as welfare economics, doughnut economics, and circular economy models, which move beyond traditional growth metrics. It will also examine how these progressive models are being taught and integrated into modern economic curricula.
Curriculum Innovation: Integrating Sustainability Systematically Across Business, Accounting, Entrepreneurship, and Economics Programs. This area will address strategies, challenges, and successes in embedding sustainability principles into core and specialized courses across various academic programs, from curriculum design to teaching methodologies.
Sustainable Entrepreneurship Education: Nurturing a Generation of Impact-Driven Business Leaders. Here, we investigate the pivotal role of education in equipping students with the mindset, skills, and tools necessary to create and scale business ventures that are not only profitable but also deliver positive social and environmental impact.
The Evolution of Accounting Standards: Towards Comprehensive Sustainability Reporting and Assurance, and its Impact on Accounting Education. This session will analyze the latest developments in sustainability reporting standards (e.g., GRI, SASB, IFRS Sustainability Standards), the challenges of auditing and assurance, and how accounting curricula are adapting to prepare future accountants.
Transformative Business Models: Circular Economy, Social Enterprise, and their Pedagogical Implications. This sub-theme will delve into case studies and theories behind innovative business models like the circular economy and social enterprises, examining how these concepts are taught and applied in business education to foster responsible innovation.
Ethical Leadership and Corporate Governance for Sustainable Development: Preparing Future Professionals. This section discusses the critical importance of ethical leadership and robust corporate governance in advancing the sustainability agenda, and how education shapes the ethos and capabilities of future business leaders to navigate ethical dilemmas and make sustainable decisions.
Research Frontiers in Sustainable Economics, Business, and Education: Shaping Future Knowledge and Professional Competencies. This final sub-theme aims to identify new and interdisciplinary research areas in sustainability relevant to academics, exploring how these research findings can be integrated into professional practice and educational programs to build essential competencies.
Through these comprehensive discussions, IECES 2025 aims to foster critical dialogue, promote collaborative research, and inspire innovative educational practices that will equip both present and future generations of economists, business leaders, accountants, and entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools to drive global sustainability.
